Kolkata-class

Stable

All three Project 15A destroyers remain active, with new generator equipment contracted in June 2026 to support future refits.

On 19 June 2026, the Ministry of Defence signed an approximately ₹425 crore contract for 12 indigenous 1.25 MW gas-turbine generator sets intended for Kolkata-class and other frontline destroyers, establishing a new equipment-upgrade pathway. Weeks earlier, INS Kolkata intervened in the Indian Ocean on 27 May 2026 after an attempted piracy attack against the merchant vessel Mashallah 1. The three Project 15A destroyers carry BrahMos and Barak-8 missiles and remain central to Indian carrier groups and long-range deployments. Their sustained use matters for maintaining fleet air defence and anti-surface reach while the newer Project 15B ships expand India's destroyer force.
